ANOTHER WIN -
KANSAS IRONMAN |
|
Well,
I made it to the end of my epic 3 week racing
stint with a win at the inaugural Kansas 70.3.
It was a tough string of racing including a
mini-Kona training camp after the Hawaii 70.3,
but I made it out alive with 2 wins and a top 5
placing at Alcatraz.

SAM WINS
IRONMAN 70.3 HAWAII |
Aloha
from the big Island,
It was a hot windy day on the big island today so I
finally got to taste a little of Madame Pele's wrath
(apparently when it is hot and windy in Kona they blame
it on a mythical "Madam Pele", goddess of fire,
volcanoes, dance and violence...she sounds like my kind
of girl). But with no flat tires to contend with this
year I easily defended my title at the Hawaii 70.3. It
was a great training opportunity to prepare for a tough
day in October. I heard we have had it easy,
weather-wise in the last few years so this years Hawaii
Ironman is supposed to be a rough one. I hope the wind
and heat continues all next week for my spring time mini
"Kona training camp". The harder the better :)
Next week : I tackle the Rock at the Escape from
Alcatraz triathlon.
Mahalo,
Sam |

SAM WINS 2008
WILDFLOWER |
|
Sam took the lead
and command of the bike at mile 15 at the 25th
running of the Wildflower Long Course Triathlon.
Coming into the bike-run transition with Leanda
Cave, she led briefly during the first miles of
the run until Sam pulled out her patented run
out of her Zoot cap once they hit the hills. Sam
went on to win the race by over 5 minutes.

XTRI
INTERVIEW |
In these
days leading up to the 2007 IM World
Championships in Kona,
Xtri is
focusing on Kona contenders and the buzz
surrounding the event. First up is Sam McGlone,
2006 Ironman 70.3 World Champion. She's a former
Olympian and a force to be reckoned with at the
half distance, and her inaugural full distance
race will be none other than Kona. Will she
surprise us on race day and make it all look
easy? Read on for what Sam had to say about it
all...
1. Tell us about your childhood – what type
of student you were, what sports you were
involved in, etc.
I was a geek/jock in high school. I got good
grades and trained for sports even though it was
cooler to be a slacker. But I had a great group
of friends and we had fun too. I did
cross-country and rowing in high school, but my
first love was horse riding – I had to give it
up when horses got too expensive…bikes eat less.

ANOTHER WIN |
I
won the 5430 Long Course triathlon (1/2 Ironman
distance) in Boulder this weekend, setting a new
course record and defeating a strong field
including Joanna Zeiger, Sue Williams and Mel
Ashton.
It was my first time racing at altitude so I
wasn't sure what to expect from myself. I
suffered in the swim (very common due to the
limited oxygen) but came through with a strong
bike (2:20) and run (1:26 on trail) to win the
race and set a course record of 4:17. I felt
great on the bike and enjoyed the scenic course
around the Boulder reservoir. There was good
incentive to run quickly as the heat was to soar
to 96 degrees by noon. Great training for Kona!
I will be racing in Chicago as a last "speed
workout" before Hawaii. The long training is
going well and I am looking forward to October! |

AM WINS VINEMAN
IRONMAN 70.3 |
I
am in beautiful Sonoma county - the heart of wine
country (or as the locals like to put it "Sonoma is
for wine; Napa is for auto parts") for the Vineman
Ironman 70.3. I had a great day, winning the race
and setting a new course record. It was my second
match up against...

SAM WINS HONU
IRONMAN 70.3 |
|
Sam
wins the 2007 Honu 70.3 in 4:31:42. This
is Sam's first win of the 2007 season.
With a very small but strong women's
field that included Michellie Jones, Sam
was able to overcome a flat tire at
20miles into the bike segment and put in
a strong run to claim the victory. This
race will kick off a mini - training
camp in Kona where Sam intends to get in
some valuable training on the Hawaii
Ironman course in preparation for her
debut at the Ironman distance in Kona
this fall. |
|
2007 - BANG
THEY ARE OFF |
|
The
starters gun is about to go off for Samantha as she
begins her 2007 season with St.Anthony's and then the
St.Croix 70.3 triathlon. This is the beginning of a very
different yet exciting season for Sam. She is stepping
up to the Ironman distance at Kona. She has taken a
longer break over the winter season, enjoyed some skiing
and then got some base miles in Australia as well.

|
2006 - IT'S A WRAP |
|
Well,
it is finally the end of a long season. It was
an exciting year - I think of it as a "Tale of
Two Cities" year : it was the best of times and
the worst of times. In moving to Colorado
Springs this year I learned some things about
how I respond to altitude...
